Zimbabwe Bans Imports of Fruit & Veg, Says Local Production Will Meet Demand

Zimbabwe has banned imports of fresh fruit and vegetables with immediate effect, the agriculture ministry said on Wednesday, arguing that increased local production will meet domestic demand.

The ban will mostly impact supplies of tomatoes, potatoes, mangoes, grapes and apples from neighbouring South Africa, the ministry said in a statement, without giving figures on how much the fruit and vegetable import market is worth.

Tsunami-Triggering Earthquake Strikes Chile, kills 5, Releases 300 Prisoners

A mighty 8.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern Chile late Tuesday, triggering small landslides, sapping power, and generating a tsunami.

 5 deaths have been reported and about 300 prisoners escaped from northern port city of Iquique in the immediate aftermath, said Interior Minister Rodrigo Penailillo.
